Travel Tips - Jet Lag
- Jet lag occurs when your body’s biological clock is desynchronised after you travel across several time zones. Jet lag can affect your physical and mental capacity.
- To mitigate the impact on jet lag in the first few days of your stay while your body acclimatises to a new time zone, you need to think ahead and synchronise your body clock, before you go.
- If you are travelling East, try to go to bed earlier for a few nights. If you go west, then go to bed later.
- The following suggestions may also help to reduce the effects of jet lag:
- - Drink plenty of water before, during and after the flight to avoid dehydration.
- - Do not drink a lot of alcohol or take unnecessary medications during flight.
- - Sleep well before the flight and during long trips when you can.
- - If you travel West over four time zones or more (to New York, for example), be sure you get bright daylight in the early evening. This will help acclimatise to the new zone.
- - If you’re travelling East, back to the United Kingdom, try to come back around noon when there’s the brightest daylight. Wear eyeshades board the aircraft and try to stay in the darkness and silence.
- - Exercise on the plane. Not just walking in the cabin - stretching in your chair. This will help blood circulation and reduce swelling of your feet and legs.
